My Curly Hair/Hair Extensions Tutorial!

So truth is, I suck at making videos. As in, I am a big weirdo in real life and I am at least able to disguise that from behind a carefully written post on a blog, but it just comes out in videos. Sorry if I am offensive/abrasive/hard to understand in my video! I also had to learn iMovie to make this, which I still don't understand. Which makes me feel 100 years old and unable to keep up with the demands of social media. I mean, gosh, I didn't even have a Twitter account until Sam bullied me into it yesterday. I'm a granny.

So I actually filmed my whole entire hair-curling tutorial, but that included with my hair-extension tutorial was 20 minutes long, and no video-hosting site under the sun would host that video for free, so I cut out the hair curling part and just showed you the hair extension part, since that is really the questions I get a lot are about.

But! Remember when I said I already photographed my hair-curling tutorial before filming it? Lucky for you (or not), I still have those photos. So I will include a few of them, just briefly discussing how I curl my hair in case any of you ladies have not mastered that strangely difficult task.

And if you just want to see how I add extensions to my hair (& some general information about extensions), scroll down to the bottom after clicking "Read More" to see the short video I made!

Here is what you will need:

  • Heat protectant
  • A hot hot hot iron - Make sure that sucker gets up to 360-400 degrees or else your curls won't last!
  • A brush & a comb
  • Hair spray
  • A claw clip
  • Optional: clip-in hair extensions!

1. After putting up the top half of my hair & spritzing my lower half of hair with heat protectant, I use my 1" curling iron (set at 400 degrees!) and curl one-inch thick strands of hair away from my face until I reach the middle of the back of my head. Then I switch to the other side of my face, and curl the hair away from my face until all the hair is curled. Make sense?

2. I pull down the top half of my hair and repeat the process, until all of my hair is curled. I do curl them pretty tight, but that's what I want because I'll be brushing them out later. Once I've curled all my hair, I make sure to let the curls cool for at least 10 minutes, because they won't stay curled all day unless you let them set like that! Hair is flexible when it's hot, and inflexible when it's cooled, so when you let them cool in a curled position, it's kind of like you're freezing them into a curled shape. Make sense? No? This is why I did a video. Dangit.

3. After the curls have completely cooled, I brush them out with my brush and my fingers. Not 100% brushing them out, but just enough so they look wavy and soft and blend together.

4. After that, I grab a few layers of hair around the crown of my head and tease like it's my job. I pull up little sections of hair and use the comb to backcomb underneath each section. This is how I get added volume to my naturally thin hair.

5. I also do this to the hair on the sides of my head, staying close to the root with my teasing.

6. After that, I slightly brush around the teasing that I've done to kind of "soften" the appearance of my hair so that it doesn't look like a giant rat's nest.

7. Just a little bit of hair spray to help maintain it's shape throughout the day, and.....

Done!

And my video on how I add extensions:

  6. Can you please move to Orange County so we can be in-person friends? Cause you're hysterical. And second of all (did I say first of all?) your accent is the cutest, which is why I love video blogging. I always wonder what everyone sounds like. Is that weird?

Third of all - and on to hair - I'm so glad that I do not have to curl my hair and/or wear extensions. Cause I'm almost positive that I would fail miserably at it. I suck at hair. Like suck. It's not pretty if its not the three things I know how to do.

That was a long comment. But I really liked your video. K bye.

  7. LOVE THIS!!! Ahhhh! I might go back and count how many times you said 'ghetto'! ha! You're the best, I'm so glad you did this. When I lived Hawaii, I wore hair extensions for our crazy nights out in Waikiki. I literally have the SAME EXACT hair as you "fine, thin, soft, and I don't know about you but it only grows to a certain length" no matter how many years without a cut! ewwww! Anyways, haven't played with extensions since then but you're making me want to truck to the ghetto and buy a few!! They look awesome! Great tutorial!!

  8. Go to the ghetto and buy extensions???? You crack me up! BTW, I don't hear an accent, does that mean I lave an accent too? In all seriousness, you hair looks great and your extensions are a perfect match :)

"DIY crap": THE HORROR. I'm not sure if we can be friends anymore (sidenote: yes we can)
I must go to "the ghetto" and get some. This looks fun!
I lol-ed about you taking a drink because that's real life
I love that someone comments on your "northern" accent. hahahahahhah WHAT ACCENT. the midwest accent is no accent at all. that's why all the newscasters are from here.

I want to vlog! but what about? :(

  15. Love your video! I bought my extensions from the non-ghetto aka Sally's Beauty Supply and I paid way more than $60...boo. I had my clip-in extensions them put in at a salon for a wedding but I am dying to wear them again so now I can try to follow your tutorial! PS- what accent are people talking about?! I wonder what people are hearing in our "up North" accents. Either way, I'm like 'dem accents. Oh ya you betcha!:-)

  20. Such good advice about going to the ghetto to buy your hair extensions! If I ever work up the nerve to give them a try, I'll be sure to do that. :) Do you know what else I go to the hood for? To get my nails done! It's been awhile since I've treated myself, but the same salon I always go to has been doing shellac for $20 for the past few years.

  22. OMG have you seen that youtube video of that girl curling her hair and then IT BURNS RIGHT OFF ONTO HER CURLING IRON? (here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LdVuSvZOqXM) I totally freaked out this morning when I was curling my hair hoping that my curling iron wasn't TOO hot as to freaking burn my hair off.

Anyway, thanks for the tutorial, I will have to go out and buy some extensions soon! :) I'll show my husband a picture of you and tell him that THIS IS WHAT I WILL LOOK LIKE AFTER I PUT IN EXTENSIONS. Because he'll probably need convincing that I need to spend $60+ on fake hair. TOTES WORTH IT.

  23. Lynette I loved the video! Although I really have to say I could hear a bit of your North Eastern Michigander accent throughout the video. Hope you make more and maybe we can collaborate soon. I'd love to do your makeup some day :)

  25. I am interested in getting natural hair extensions, but I am a little concerned about what they can do to your hair. I am only a teen but i have thin/fine hair that is a little damaged from blow-drying and frequent use of the flat iron. I want to know if hair extensions could ruin my hair and if it is a bad idea to get them? I do not want cause any further damage

  26. Very creative I like it. I like your Hair Extensions. Can i have it?
