Well here was my attempt to fix whatever was wrong here. But I'm not 100% sold on this outfit either, so now I'm afraid I don't like this skirt as much as I thought I did. I just fell so madly in love with it when I saw one of my girlfriend's wearing it! Although she is probably under 5'0 and 90lbs, so probably anything looks cute on her, so... more poor judgement on my part? Possibly.
I'm really trying to learn to analyze my closet and figure out what I actually need (like new heels) vs. what I tend to purchase because it's OMGSPARKLYANDCHEAP (such as Forever 21 jewelry and tops that I can't wear with anything but a blazer, and tucked into a skirt). I feel like I read so much information on putting together a functional, workable wardrobe, but it's just not something I feel I'm really grasping with my own closet. I wonder if this means that I don't necessarily need anything? What a terrible thought. Please don't tell my husband. He'll stop giving me money. And for the record, he loves me in all my omgsparklyandcheap things. What a guy, huh?
I think because the skirt is such a standout on its own a simple black shirt would be perfect with this outfit.
ReplyDeleteGive it another shot :)
Lynette, I LOVE this outfit! The proportions are perfect and it's such a girly and classy look. My top "I-gotta-have-it-now" item is a long sleeve striped shirt like this one. I'm hoping to score one at a thrift shop, because, well I'm cheap.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm pretty sure your Matt is just like my Matt- attracted to all things sparkly and (sometimes) gaudy. If you could only see the dress HE picked out and purchased for me for our first Christmas together...I still shudder thinking about it.

I have figured out what I need really by blogging in the past few years. For me, I noticed that 70% of my closet was tops and I realized I needed more 'bottoms.' I'm slowly trying to fix that. I love the skirt!

I really like the fitted top with this skirt (compared to the polka blouse), but there's something about the stripes and the flap of the skirt that makes my brows furrow. Maybe you could try it with a solid colored fitted top (add a blazer if it's cold)?
ReplyDeleteYou say "I feel like I read so much information on putting together a functional, workable wardrobe, but it's just not something I feel I'm really grasping with my own closet" -- why not? Is it because you already have one? Or you don't know what kinds of pieces are best? I'd love to get some heads together on this one to see if we can't figure this out!
the proportions are so much better this round! i think you'll get a lot of wear out of this in the spring with some bare legs (is that a thing in chicago?). how hot of a little number would this be with a red top (maybe your vday dress tucked in? or your red cardi?) oor your hot pink button down and a pair of slinky heels? i think your guy would like that outfit.

I actually really love this outfit! I think the less blousy / billowy top really made all the difference. And I feel you on the reading lots of posts and articles about creating a working wardrobe and then forgetting all of it when you see sparkly stuff on mega sale. Why would I buy some boring basic when I could buy sparkles?
ReplyDeleteYou are too hard on yourself, this outfit is adorable! And I have the same problem, I feel like my closet is missing something {or some THINGS} all the time. I just need to learn to put together the things I have in different ways. I think you could pair this skirt with a black shirt, like Faith said, and it would look like a peplum dress! Either way, this outfit is really cute!

love the makeup and the necklace, you look fabulous!
ReplyDeleteHaha! He is a definite keeper:)! Love the way you restyled the peplum skirt with the striped top!
ReplyDeleteI can absolutely relate to having issues of buying what you need vs/ OMGITSADORBS! You couldn't have said it better! Ugh- I feel like I should have a handle on it after blogging but it's tough! PS- I think your outfit is fabulous! You look so tiny and chic!

I just found your blog when looking for reviews of the new Revlon Nearly Naked foundation. I ended up reading a handful of your other posts too though and you seem so lovely! I am now following :) Love the blog and your work outfits always look so chic and effortlessly put together, I could definitely learn a thing or too! I look forward to reading more.

I love this - and the second part of that saying is "try, try again," so I say stick with it! I want one post a week with that skirt until you find one you love! :)

See Mo Go.
you are soooooo cute!! I think it is great you are trying outfits you don't necessarily love or like, I still like the skirt, maybe the tights with a brighter heel would work? Great pop of color on your necklace!

You rock everything you wear. You can get a lot of different looks with this skirt. Try a solid top and classic pumps with a heel. This will be a nice summer skirt too.
ReplyDeleteI think this looks good. I think since the peplum is so voluminous you should stick with fitted up top. I really think a lace top would look nice. Try a blazer, too! I love the skirt.
ReplyDeleteI love the outfit! It would be such a good transition blog from work to going out! So pretty :)

I love that you put the price next to your items, I am such a deal hunter and can appreciate those! at the same time, I suffer from also buying anything that is cheap and shiny and then wonder what I was thinking. I think you look great in the skirt though! Newest follower, can't wait to see other outfits!

I personally love this look! And the skirt is great... I mean it is a neutral color, but the peplum gives it some life. I agree with what others said above and maybe try it with a neutral top and some amazing pumps! And I feel ya on buying the OMG items. I do it a lot. I have A LOT of clothes. I have a lot of functional and not so functional clothes that I have been collecting over the past 6 years or so... still figuring it out... You are not alone! ;)
ReplyDeleteP.S. Your makeup always looks perfect, jealous!
I think it looks great on you!
ReplyDeleteBut I can't get down with a peplum skirt for myself. I have a small build uptop with big hips and I'm afraid it will accentuate that.
Btw,I wanted to come over and say hello from the Kristin's giveaway! I'm a fellow participant in it and a new follower!

I love your outfit! Your striped shirt is exactly what I've been looking for, is it a recent purchase??
ReplyDeleteThis skirt is gorgeous on you. I think you just need to find the right top for it. Maybe s solid? Don't give up on it yet!
ReplyDeleteWhat if you added a belt to the skirt? That might help the peplum stand out and break up the lines between the two pieces. Don't give up on it yet!
ReplyDeleteComing from another Lynette, I think the top needs a flouce or two to balance the peplum and the shoes need to be sleeker - not so heavy....maybe goes for the stockings too ?? You are gorgeous despite the mismatch ;)
